The Smithfield Police Department is currently taking applications for the position of Police Officer.  Application and Authorization for Release of Information forms may be picked up Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Town Hall, 310 Institute Street, Smithfield, Virginia or can be downloaded from

We are seeking Police Officer applicants who can accept responsibility, act independently, and be dedicated to serving our citizens as we continue to place an emphasis on community-oriented police philosophies. Police Officers are responsible for patrolling and responding to calls for service, traffic enforcement, and enforcing state and local laws.  Applicants must be 21 years of age, possess a high school diploma, a valid Virginia driver’s license, and must have no felony or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.  Ideal candidates will possess prior law enforcement experience and/or college level course work in Criminal Justice or a related field.  Selected individuals will be required to undergo a comprehensive background investigation, including drug/alcohol testing and medical examination.  Individuals who have tattoos that are visible while wearing the official uniform of the Smithfield Police Department are not eligible for consideration.  The parameters of this restriction are defined as tattoos visible below the uniform short-sleeve cut and below the mid-thigh.


Salary Range:  $35,827 to $55,532 depending on qualifications with excellent benefits including:  Virginia State Retirement (LEOS), and 100% Employee Paid Health and Dental Care Coverage with dependent options.
